A Spring Reflection on Being Seen, Loved, and Cared For
Let’s be honest – by the end of winter, we’ve all had enough of freezing cold mornings that make it hard to get out of bed, having to layer on clothing, and evenings that sneak up on you – you blink and its dark outside. By the time spring arrives, you can almost feel everyone’s collective sigh of relief. The mornings are still a little crisp, but by midday the sun lingers longer and warmer.
In some parts of South Africa, jacarandas burst into bloom, turning streets into beautiful purple tunnels. Along the Cape coast, wildflowers stretch as far as the eye can see – bright carpets of daisies, vygies, and other beautiful wildflowers cover fields and hillsides. One of the trips on my bucket list is driving up the West Coast to see the daisies in full bloom.
Other spring perks are that washing dries quicker on the line, strawberries are in season, and we get to trade our scarves and boots for sandals and sundresses. Life just feels lighter, fresher, and more hopeful. It’s in this shift of the seasons that I am reminded of a Bible verse from Luke 12:27.
“Walk into the fields and look at the wildflowers. They don’t fuss with their appearance – but have you ever seen colour and design quite like that? The ten best-dressed men and women in the country look shabby alongside them. If God gives such attention to the wildflowers, most of them never even seen, don’t you think he’ll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you?”
Wildflowers have such an effortless beauty. They don’t spend time worrying about how they look, whether they’re “good enough,” or if anyone sees them. Out in the quiet corners of the world and along roadsides, wildflowers bloom without fanfare.

We live in a world where success is often measured by how put-together everything looks from the outside. We start believing the lie that our worth depends on how well we keep up appearances, how productive we are, or how closely our lives match someone else’s highlight reel. And somewhere along the way, we forget that being deeply loved and cared for has nothing to do with looking perfect.
Wildflowers don’t worry about any of that. They don’t compare themselves to the flower next to them. They don’t wonder if they’re enough.
They simply grow.
Not because they’re striving, but because they’re rooted, nourished, and held by the One who made them – and that’s more than enough. So I wonder… what if we stopped fussing too?
What if spring became a reminder not to do more, but to rest in the fact that we are already seen and loved? What if we trusted that God – who gives such attention to the wildflowers – cares for us even more deeply? Let Spring be gentle on you. This is the heart behind Salt + Light Co. – to invite you to slow down, breathe deeply, and remember what really matters.
I recently launched my ‘Petals + Peace’ Gift Set – a joyful and beautiful way to welcome spring. Included in the set is a packet of cosmos seeds. I have just planted mine and can’t wait for the pops of purples and pinks in my garden. They will remind me to ‘consider the wildflowers’ (Luke 12:27). This spring, take a deep breath. Loosen your grip on the striving and let go of the pressure to be “more”. Let beauty be simple and give yourself permission to bloom – exactly as you are.

With light and grace,
